ESPN's Jay Bilas wouldn’t pick DeMarcus Cousins

I love Jay, but he's just wrong here. You don't sacrifice excellence in the name of perfection. Every choice carries risk. If the only problem with DeMarcus is perceived immaturity (he's just a kid!), you're going to regret passing on him in a few short years. He's a 20 and 10 guy from day one. He's got franchise player and all-star written all over him.

And what is the risk? There is no long-term committment. An NBA rookie’s contract is only guaranteed for two years under the current CBA. If DeMarcus doesn't pan out in his first season, the team doesn't have to pick up his third-year option. That's not exactly going out on a limb. No, the risk-reward ratio seems way too favorable to be saying what Jay is saying.

Jay sounds a little too much like Decca Records passing on the Beatles. "We don't like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out."

Ouch.

If I were an owner, I'd rather have him and find out whether he's worth keeping than give my competitors the chance to hit the jackpot.

Good ol' Jay Bias.

Bilas is giving his opinion based on the mindset of what he thinks some owners and General Managers are concerned about. But he is simply wrong. Fact is, most top executives take the position that winning is everything and the coaches and players are paid enough to deal with the issues trouble makers, hot heads and immature players bring to the table. So IMO Bilas is totally incorrect about motivations of those at the top, and we will see who is more right in about 58 hours.

I think everyone that is questioning Cuz's character is out to lunch on this. The only thing I can draw from this is it's apparent that your actions in high school can follow you around like a ball and chain. All these anti-Cuz "rube's" fail to even acknowledge that Cuz was probably the most taunted and physically berated player in the nation this year and he handled it for the most part like a champ.

The ONLY thing I wonder about with him is whether he can play 35 to 40 minutes with peak effort. I am not convinced at his best shape he will be able to do this in the league. Otherwise he is without a doubt THE best big man in this years draft.
