Michael Gilchrist isn't sure if he'll sign with UK in November or wait until his high school season ends to keep all his options open

Why wouldn't he keep his options open? Seems like the smart thing to do.
The only reason a kid should not keep his options open is if his position is in danger of being given away. I would expect this trend to continue on a larger scale in the future.
This will obviously make the schools more nervous but it is the best thing for the talented kids. If things go down (such as a coach change) then you aren't stuck with broken promises.
Calipari isn't going to give his scholarship away.
But another reason to sign is to end the recruiting process. He'd be hands-off to other coaches/schools after that. May not be a problem for him, since he's "committed" to UK, but the recuiting process does take a toll on some recruits. This is the reason most prominently put forward on the NCAA website to sign with a school.

Another reason to wait until late is to promote themselves. It is now fashionable to wait until the last day.
