Lexington Mayor Jim Gray called for a study to determine the feasibility of redesigning and renovating Rupp Arena and the Lexington Center, but did not mention building a new downtown arena
Rupp Arena could be rennovated again, to make it a much more modern venue, but it would cost as much as it would to build a brand new arena. A new arena down town really isn't a viable option as there is no area suitable for a new arena. I think the best route would be to build a basketball arena on campus. There is plenty of room on or around the UK campus, and the university would actually control the building instead of the Civic Center Corp. or the city.
That spiel was a joke, if the admin and the city haven't seen the benefits of a new arena then they are even more inept than I imagined.
There is no doubt that UK should have THE most modern basketball facility in sports. It should seat aprox 30,000 and be a shining beacon of basketball Mecca. It's easy to see that a top notch arena is a huge draw to recruiting, hell look at Pitino. His new arena has landed him two 5* kids since it opened. Arguably better than he's been able to recruit in the ville to date.
If UK doesn't proceed in this direction it is a massive FAIL.
