Aaron's synopis is exactly what I believe also. Success brings scrutiny - especially when your recruiting young players that have unscrupulous people swarming around them.
Tubby would not even recruit most of the high profile players Cal signs regularly. Take your pick. Will it be Tubby that could not win the big ones but was never scrutinized, or Cal that does and is?
